Election and political law

Few areas of law have seen such controversy and attention as elections and campaign finance in just the past eight years. What was once political is now heavily regulated with media and blogger attention literally every hour. Complying with the law, anticipating legal issues and having in-depth knowledge at your side are crucial for any candidate and political organization. With many years of experience in political campaigns and over ten years as an election lawyer, Christian Sande has specific experience in the wide variety of legal issues facing voters, candidates and political organizations, including:

  • Ballot access
  • Contribution limits and rules
  • Spending limits and rules
  • Voting rules and rights
  • Campaign material and content
  • Independent expenditures
  • First Amendment rights
    (free speech and free association)
  • Election re-counts
  • Libel, slander and defamation
  • Get-Out-The Vote activities
  • Political advertising
  • Political committee organization
  • Campaign and committee reporting
  • Media communications
  • Voting equipment rules

Christian Sande LLC is uniquely suited to represent candidates, voters, political committees, parties and labor groups in election law in Minnesota. A former statewide candidate himself, Christian has in depth knowledge of the law and the practical matters of politics and getting elected. He continues to represent candidates and political groups before the Minnesota Campaign Finance & Public Disclosure Board, the Federal Elections Commission, the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings and in state and federal court.

In November and December 2006, Christian was honored to serve as special counsel to the Auditor of St. Louis County, Minnesota, in a recount for the County Attorney’s race—a race that was decided by just 88 votes out of over 80,000 ballots cast. Christian has been a regular commentator on radio and television, including serving as the legal commentator for the 2004 election night coverage on KMSP-TV Channel 9 News in the Twin Cities. He is the author of “When Perception Meets Reality: The Elusive Goal of Impartial Election Oversight” in the Winter 2008 issue of the William Mitchell Law Review.
